UL Updates and File Reviews
CORD SETS AND POWER SUPPY - UL 817
A. INSULATING MATERIALS
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS REQUIREMENT APPLIES TO ALL POLYMERIC MATERIALS USED IN
MOLDED-ON OR ULTRASONICALLY WELDED FITTINGS OF A CORD SET OR POWER SUPPLY
CORD.
If your company employs only assembled-on Listed (AXUT) or Recognized
(AXUT2) fittings that already comply with the material requirements in UL
498 in the above products
Paragraph 9.11 This paragraph requires that plastic materials used in the
fittings of a cord set or power supply cord shall be UL R/C with a minimum
flammability rating of 94 HB.
Exception: A polymeric material that has been subjected to the 12mm or 3/4
in end product flame tests described in the Standard for Polymeric
Materials-Use in Electrical Equipment Evaluations, UL 746C, need not have a
flame rating.
EVALUATIONS FOR COMPLIANCE
1. Manufacturers of cord sets and power supply cords that employ
Recognized Plastic Materials (QMFZ2) having 94 HB flammability rating are
asked to identify the manufacturer and designation of the material. UL will
then review the Recognition report to determine compliance. If the material
is in compliance, UL will add the Recognized (94 HB) Plastic Material to
their Follow- Up Services Procedure.
2. Manufacturers of cord sets and power supply cords wishing to continue to
use non- Recognized Component Plastic Materials can have their polymeric
material(s) investigated as an Unlisted Component. The investigation will
consist of conducting a Horizontal Burning Test per the requirements in the
Standard for attests for Flammability of Plastic.
Paragraph 95.1, These paragraphs were revised to require that each outlet
95.2, 95.3 of cord connectors of an outdoor-use cord set, shall be capable
of being mated with a solid-blade attachment plug of the mating
configuration after four- hour conditioning period, at a temperature of
minus 20.0 +/- 1 C (minus 4+/-1.8 F) instead of minus 10.0 +/-2 C. One cord
connector and one mating attachment plug are to be taken from the
conditioning a chamber, and immediately upon removal, the fittings are to be
mated with an insertion force of 40 lbf (178 N) instead of 30 lbf. Applied
for a maximum of one minute without resulting in a gap, between the faces of
the mated fittings, exceeding 0.079 inch (2 mm) instead of 0.060 inch (1.52
mm).
The differences from the existing test is that the temperature is at minus
20.0 +/-1 C, the insertion force is 40 lbf, and the resulting gap between
the face of the mated fittings is not to exceed 0.079 inches.
EVALUATION FOR COMPLIANCE
1. Each manufacturer of cord connectors for outdoor-use cord sets will be
asked to provide nine samples of each type of cord connectors for testing.
In order to better select representative samples for testing, each
manufacturer is asked to identify the catalog number and contact type of
each cord connector for outdoor use as well as the volume and section
